What is Self-care?

Self-care is any deliberate activity to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health.

We often forget to do this and spend more time considering others’ needs.

Sometimes, you just need to focus on yourself and let other people solve their own problems.

Support, encourage, and empathise with them, but know that you don’t have to be their hero, and your needs are equally important.

Simply put, good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety.

Recognise the triggers on a bad day.

Bad days happen and thats OK.

One thing I have learned to do is to recognise the triggers that lead to a bad day or feelings that are not mine.

Write them down so you can recognise when they happen. For me, it would be……..

  • Withdraw into me
  • Lose my passion for being creative
  • Tired want to sleep
  • Not bothered about wearing make-up
  • Tearful and easily emotional
  • Quiet
  • Headache and jaw ache/discomfort

Wellness tools

Through attending WRAP (wellness recovery action plan) and volunteering as a facilitator for Leeds Recovery College, one of the most influential things for me was learning about self-care and wellness tools.

When you feel burnt out, it’s time to look after yourself.

When we are unwell, we sometimes lose the thread of our lives.

This is the time for self-care and look at wellness tools.

All this is a simple list of things you have done in the past to help yourself stay well.

Here are a few ideas from my list; remember, we are all different and unique,e and its finding what works for you:

  • Go Outside
  • Deep breaths
  • Listen to uplifting music
  • Relaxing mediation
  • Write in a journal
  • Be creative
  • Read a book
  • Make a coffee and smell the aroma
  • Wear or smell your favourite perfume/aftershave
  • Take a nap
  • Talk to a friend
  • Eat a healthy snack or favourite treat
  • Surround yourself with people who are positive
  • Do something that makes you laugh
  • Take a warm shower / wash your hair

“When I feel like running or fleeing, it’s time to face my fears with courage”.

Although my automatic response is often to run away, numb my feelings, or somehow distract myself, escaping only temporarily relieves anxiety.

Fear will return, possibly in a different form, until you choose to confront it with kindness.” ~Carly Hamilton-Jones

Childhood can leave us with a lot of scars and limiting beliefs about our worth.

But healing and seeing ourselves in a new, brighter light is possible.

Remember I am new to this, I can practice, I can build the skill.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is all about taking the time to nurture and support your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It’s not just about bubble baths or spa days; it’s about creating a lifestyle that helps you recharge, feel balanced, and be your best self. Practising self-care involves setting boundaries, listening to your body, and making choices that align with your needs and values.

How to Watch for Your Triggers

Recognising your triggers—the people, situations, or emotions that set off negative reactions—is a key part of self-care. By being aware of what causes stress, anxiety, or frustration, you can take proactive steps to manage or avoid those triggers.

🧠 Stay aware of your emotions and physical sensations. If you start feeling anxious, angry or overwhelmed, take a moment to check in with yourself.
💬 Communicate your needs with others. If a situation or person is triggering you, it’s okay to set boundaries or ask for space.
🔄 Reflect on patterns. Pay attention to recurring events that cause emotional reactions and look for ways to shift your mindset or response.

Go-To Self-Care List

When life feels overwhelming, it’s helpful to have a list of self-care activities that you can turn to for comfort and relaxation. Here’s my personal go-to list:

  1. Mindful Breathing – Take a few deep breaths, focus on the present moment, and ground yourself.
  2. Journaling – Writing down my thoughts helps clear my mind and process emotions.
  3. Creative Expression – Whether it’s drawing, painting, or crafting, creativity is my way to release tension.
  4. Movement – A walk in nature or a gentle stretch brings peace and clarity.
  5. Reading – Escaping into a good book allows me to unwind and disconnect from stress.
  6. Listening to Music – Music has the power to shift my mood and bring me calm.
  7. A Warm Bath or Shower – A simple, soothing ritual that helps me feel grounded.
  8. Connecting with a Friend – A chat with a close friend reminds me that I’m not alone and brings comfort.

A Quote to Reflect On

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.”

Remember, self-care is not selfish—it’s essential. By taking the time to check in with yourself and practice these small acts of care, you’re investing in your well-being and creating a healthier, happier version of yourself. 🌿💖

My Journey by Debbie Crouch

It started with learning to be creative in 2019

Art for Wellness is my passion and dream project that came to life in March 2020.

Embarking on a new skill or hobby is satisfying and invigorating.

Fire up your imagination and explore new ideas.

Being creative gives me all the good stuff that meditation brings.

It improves brain function and boosts the immune system.

More importantly, it’s “Me” time and immensely therapeutic.
