Therapeutic Art Workshops for People Living with Chronic Pain

Creating space to breathe, connect and feel supported through creativity

Living with chronic pain can affect so much more than the body. It can impact your mood, confidence, energy, relationships and the things you feel able to do each day.

That’s why we’re delighted to be launching a new programme of Therapeutic Art Workshops for people living with chronic pain, supported by Barnsley Council.

These free, welcoming sessions are about giving people a space to pause, create, connect and simply be themselves.

You don’t need to be an artist

One of the things we hear time and time again at Art for Wellness is:

“But I’m not artistic!”

Our answer?

You don’t need to be. ❤️

These workshops aren’t about creating perfect pictures or producing something for an exhibition. They are about the experience of creating.

You can pick up a paintbrush, make marks, play with colour, create a collage, doodle, journal or simply experiment.

There is no right or wrong.

Just a safe, supportive space where you can explore creativity at your own pace.

Creativity can give you a moment for YOU

When you live with ongoing pain, it can sometimes feel as though life revolves around appointments, symptoms, limitations and managing each day.

Creative activity can offer a chance to focus on something different.

A colour.

A shape.

A texture.

A pattern.

A conversation.

A few moments where your attention isn’t on everything you have to do.

Our workshops are designed to encourage:

  • 💜 Self-expression when words aren’t enough
  • 💗 Connection with people who understand
  • 💚 Relaxation and stress reduction
  • 🧡 A sense of being seen, heard and supported
  • 💙 Time to focus on yourself
  • 💜 Confidence through creativity

What might we create?

Every session can be different.

Creative activities may include:

🎨 Painting and drawing
🌿 Nature-inspired art
✂️ Collage and mixed media
🧶 Mindful crafts
📖 Journaling and reflective art
✨ Colour, pattern and imaginative activities

You might create something beautiful.

You might create something completely abstract.

You might discover a new favourite activity.

Or you might simply enjoy sitting around a table with other people, having a cuppa and making something with your hands.

It all counts.

A community of people who understand

Perhaps one of the most important parts of these workshops is connection.

Chronic pain can be isolating. It can be difficult when other people don’t understand why you can’t always do the things you used to do.

These sessions provide an opportunity to meet others who are also living with chronic pain in a relaxed and supportive environment.

There is no pressure to talk about your pain.

There is no pressure to share your artwork.

There is no pressure to be anything other than yourself.

Come as you are. Create at your own pace.

At Art for Wellness, we believe creativity belongs to everyone.

You don’t need experience.

You don’t need confidence.

You don’t need to know what you’re going to make.

And you certainly don’t need to be “good at art”.

You just need to come as you are.

Take two hours for yourself.

Make something.

Meet people.

Have a little fun.

And give yourself permission to pause.

Supported by Grant Funding from Barnsley Council 💜

We are delighted that our Therapeutic Art Workshops for people living with chronic pain are supported through grant funding from Barnsley Council.

This funding is helping us provide eight free creative wellbeing sessions in the Penistone community, with all art materials provided.

The grant enables Art for Wellness CIC to create a welcoming and inclusive space where people living with chronic pain can:

  • 🎨 Explore creativity without pressure
  • 💜 Take time for themselves
  • 🌿 Relax and reduce stress
  • 💗 Connect with others who understand
  • ✨ Express themselves through art

We believe that everyone should have access to opportunities that support wellbeing, connection and creativity — and this funding is helping us make that possible within our local community.

A huge thank you to Barnsley Council for supporting this project and helping us bring creative wellbeing opportunities to people living with chronic pain.
