The Inspiration of Trees
By Debbie Crouch & Heather Roundell
Why We Love Trees
Trees have always been one of our biggest sources of inspiration. They stand strong, growing and changing with the seasons, just like creativity itself. There is something deeply grounding about their presence, offering us a moment of peace and reflection. Whether walking through a forest, sitting beneath a grand oak, or simply sketching their intricate branches, trees remind us of the beauty in nature and the cycles of life.
The Symbolism of Trees
Trees are powerful symbols across cultures and beliefs. They represent growth, strength, resilience, and wisdom. They are seen as a connection between earth and sky, with their roots grounding them while their branches reach upwards. In many spiritual traditions, trees symbolise protection, healing, and renewal.
Trees in Art
One of the biggest themes in art, trees appear in countless paintings, sketches, and sculptures. Artists are drawn to their natural beauty, organic shapes, and the emotions they evoke. The way the light filters through their leaves, the patterns in their bark, and the movement of their branches all provide endless creative possibilities.

How Trees Inspire Us
We often take photos of trees during our walks, capturing their shapes, textures, and the way they interact with their surroundings. These images serve as references for our artwork, sparking ideas for new pieces.
“Standing beneath a towering tree, I feel small yet deeply connected to something greater. It reminds me that creativity, like nature, is ever-growing.” – Debbie
“Every tree tells a story—its twists, knots, and broken branches show resilience, just like our creative journeys.” – Heather
We encourage everyone to go outside, observe trees closely, and use them as a source of inspiration. Whether you draw them, paint them, or simply admire their presence, trees have a way of awakening creativity in all of us.
Tree of Life
The Tree of Life symbol is commonly depicted as a large tree with roots that spread inward to the ground and branches that spread outward to the sky.
The Tree of Life symbolises personal growth, strength and beauty.

The Tree of Life’s branches strengthen and grow upwards to the sky, we too grow stronger, striving for greater knowledge, wisdom and new experiences as we move through life.
Another idea is using the tree as a symbol to tell stories about one’s life.
When you think of a tree, its roots, trunk, branches, leaves, etc, and imagine that each part of the Tree represents something about your life.

Over time, trees lose leaves and appear to be dead and can gain more unique characteristics as branches break off, new ones grow, and the weather takes its toll – all throughout which the tree remains strong and sturdy.
When conditions are right, the tree comes back to life, with beautiful leaves again, which can symbolise rebirth and getting through difficult times.
