Ways to Draw with a Pen
Drawing with a pen can be freeing, playful, and expressive. Unlike pencils, pens don’t let you erase — which means you’re encouraged to work with your lines, not against them.
Pine cones are a perfect subject for practising pen techniques because they have repeating shapes, textures, and natural symmetry.
Steps to Try:
- Start with the basic oval or cone-shaped outline.
- Lightly sketch the central stem.
- Add the overlapping scale shapes, working from the base upward.
- Use hatching, cross-hatching, or stippling to create depth and shadow.
- Add extra detail where light meets shadow to give the pine cone a three-dimensional feel.
You can experiment with a fine-liner for delicate details or a brush pen for bold, dramatic lines.
