Winter — Rest, Stillness & Self-Care

Embracing the seasons through creativity, nature and wellbeing
At Art for Wellness CIC, we believe creativity and nature can support us through every season of the year.
Each season has its own rhythm.
Autumn teaches us about change and letting go.
Winter invites us to slow down.
Spring brings new beginnings and growth.
Summer encourages us to notice joy and connection.
And winter perhaps gives us one of the most important reminders of all:
It’s okay to slow down.
❄️ What Does Winter Mean to You?
Winter can feel very different from the other seasons.
The days are shorter.
The evenings are darker.
Trees lose their leaves.
Nature becomes quieter.
For some of us, winter can feel cosy and peaceful. For others, the darker days can feel more challenging, and we may naturally want to retreat a little.
But perhaps winter isn’t asking us to be constantly productive.
Perhaps it is inviting us to pause.
Nature doesn’t stop in winter.
It simply changes its rhythm.
Trees may look bare, but beneath the soil roots are still working.
Seeds are waiting.
The natural world is preparing for what comes next.
And perhaps we can allow ourselves some of that same space.
🌙 The Beauty of Slowing Down
We often live in a world where being busy is seen as a good thing.
We’re encouraged to achieve, organise, work, plan and keep moving.
But rest is important too.
Taking time for yourself isn’t being lazy.
Slowing down isn’t giving up.
Sometimes stepping back gives us the space to think, breathe and recharge.
Creativity can become part of that process.
You don’t have to create something complicated.
You can simply sit with a piece of paper and a pencil.
Make a few marks.
Choose some colours.
Doodle.
Write.
Paint.
Collage.
Create without worrying about the outcome.
The process can be enough.
🎨 Winter Through Art
Winter has its own beautiful colour palette.
Think beyond the traditional Christmas colours and look closely at the natural world.
🌲 Deep greens
❄️ Soft whites
🌫️ Misty greys
🌌 Midnight blues
🪵 Warm browns
🌿 Bare branches
☁️ Winter skies
✨ Frost and ice
🕯️ Warm golden light
Even a grey winter landscape can inspire creativity.
Look closely at tree branches.
Notice the patterns in frost.
Watch the changing sky.
Look at shadows.
Notice the textures of bark, stones and fallen leaves.
Winter encourages us to look more closely.
🎨 A Winter Creative Prompt: My Winter Pause
Find a quiet place and take a few moments for yourself.
Start with a blank piece of paper.
Choose three colours that represent how you feel right now.
Don’t worry about whether they “match”.
Make marks across the page.
Slow marks.
Fast marks.
Light marks.
Heavy marks.
Dots.
Lines.
Circles.
Whatever feels right.
Then add a word or phrase somewhere within your artwork that represents what you need more of this winter.
Perhaps:
Rest
Calm
Space
Connection
Hope
Warmth
Joy
Time
Creativity
When you’ve finished, take a moment to look at what you’ve created.
Ask yourself:
What do I need to give myself permission to do this winter?
Maybe the answer is rest.
Maybe it’s asking for help.
Maybe it’s making time for something you enjoy.
Maybe it’s simply being kinder to yourself.
🌿 Finding Nature in Winter
Nature doesn’t disappear when winter arrives.
It simply changes.
A winter walk can become a creative adventure.
Look for:
🌲 Interesting branches
🍂 Remaining leaves
🌿 Moss and lichen
🪵 Tree bark
❄️ Frost patterns
🐦 Winter birds
☁️ Dramatic skies
🌧️ Raindrops
🪨 Stones and natural textures
Take photographs.
Collect fallen natural materials where appropriate.
Make notes about what you notice.
Create a winter nature journal.
You might even choose one tree and photograph or draw it throughout the seasons.
How does it change?
How does it stay the same?
And what does that make you think about?
💜 Creativity as a Form of Self-Care
For us at Art for Wellness CIC, creativity isn’t about producing perfect artwork.
It’s about creating opportunities to pause, explore, connect and express ourselves.
A creative activity can give your mind something different to focus on.
It can provide a sense of achievement.
It can encourage curiosity.
And when we create alongside other people, it can also create connection.
You don’t have to talk about everything you’re going through.
Sometimes sitting around a table, making something together and having a conversation is enough.
🎨 Looking Back at Our Workshops
Throughout our workshops, we’ve seen how creative activities can bring people together in all sorts of ways.
We’ve explored painting, mixed media, collage, embroidery, art journaling, mindful mark-making, sensory activities and nature-inspired creativity.
Sometimes participants arrive feeling nervous about trying something new.
Sometimes they tell us they haven’t done anything creative since school.
And sometimes they surprise themselves.
That’s one of the things we love most about our workshops.
There is no expectation to be an artist.
You simply come along as yourself.
Try something.
Experiment.
Have a go.
And see what happens.
The finished artwork is lovely, but the experience of creating it can be even more important.

✨ A Winter Reflection
Winter can be a wonderful time to look back.
Before rushing into a new year, take some time to acknowledge where you’ve been.
What have you learned?
What challenged you?
What made you smile?
Who supported you?
What are you proud of?
And perhaps most importantly:
What do you need now?
You don’t have to create a list of resolutions.
You don’t have to reinvent yourself.
You can simply notice where you are.
Sometimes that’s enough.
🕯️ Your Winter Creative Challenge
Why not create a Winter Wellbeing Jar?
Find a jar, box or container.
Each week, write down one small thing that brought you joy, comfort or peace.
It could be:
A good cup of tea.
A conversation.
A walk.
A creative moment.
A funny film.
A beautiful sunset.
A kind message.
A workshop.
A moment when you made time for yourself.
Decorate your jar or box creatively.
Then, when winter comes to an end, open it and read your little collection of moments.
You may discover that there was more light in your winter than you realised.
❄️ Rest Is Part of the Journey
The world around us doesn’t expect everything to bloom all year.
Neither should we.
There will be times when we are growing.
Times when we’re creating.
Times when we’re connecting.
And times when we simply need to rest.
Winter reminds us that rest is not the opposite of growth.
Sometimes rest is what makes growth possible.
So if you need to slow down this winter, give yourself permission.
Put the kettle on.
Wrap yourself in something warm.
Pick up your favourite creative materials.
Make something.
Or don’t.
Simply breathe.
💜 Creativity. Nature. Connection. Wellbeing.
At Art for Wellness CIC, our aim is to make creativity and creative wellbeing accessible, inclusive and affordable.
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to explore creativity, connect with others and take time for their own wellbeing.
So this winter, don’t worry about doing everything.
Give yourself permission to pause.
Notice the beauty in the quieter season.
Find inspiration in nature.
Create something simply because you want to.
And remember:
You don’t have to be productive every moment to be making progress.
Sometimes the quiet seasons are important too.
Create • Connect • Inspire Wellbeing
