Therapeutic Art: Creative Wellbeing for Adults
Finding Calm and Connection Through Creativity

Health and Growth Accelerator Community Grants Programme 2025–26
We’re excited to bring you Therapeutic Art, a five-month programme of 18 free, nature-inspired art workshops run by Art for Wellness CIC at Barnsley Civic from November 2025 to March 2026.
These workshops are designed for adults who want to reduce stress, boost confidence, and feel more connected — especially those living with mental health challenges, musculoskeletal conditions, or feeling isolated.
Each two-hour session is led by two friendly, experienced artists and includes painting, mixed media, embroidery, and sensory activities inspired by the changing seasons. You don’t need any art experience — just a willingness to try something new in a calm, welcoming space.
The workshops are all about relaxing, creating, and connecting with others. Many participants say they leave feeling calmer, more positive, and more motivated. The programme will end with a celebratory event where participants can showcase their creative work.
How to Join
The programme is open to adults referred by GPs and Social Prescribers through the Health and Growth Accelerator (HGA) Hub Pathway.
We’re also keeping a few public spaces available on Eventbrite, so local residents can join too. Each workshop has around 8 public places, with extra spaces reserved for referrals. This mix keeps the sessions inclusive and welcoming to everyone.
👉 Want to join? Check our Eventbrite page or ask your GP or Social Prescriber about a referral through the HGA Hub.

What You’ll Learn and Do
Each Therapeutic Art workshop is a chance to relax, get creative, and try something new. No matter your experience, you’ll find a welcoming space to explore your ideas and enjoy the process.
- Start with Mindfulness: Every session begins with a gentle introduction and simple mindfulness exercises to help you feel calm, focused, and ready to create.
- Art Journaling: Try your hand at art journaling, combining drawing, collage, and writing to explore thoughts, emotions, and inspiration.
- A New Project Each Time: Each workshop offers a different creative project, from painting and mixed media to embroidery and sensory art, so you can experiment with new techniques and materials.
- Community Tree Project: Contribute to a shared artwork that grows with each session — a fun way to feel part of a creative community.
By the end of each session, you’ll leave with a finished piece of art, new skills, and a sense of achievement — plus the joy of sharing your creativity with others.
Let’s create calm, connection, and creativity — together.

We take great care in choosing quality materials for all our creative projects, ensuring there is always plenty of choice for everyone taking part.
From textures and colours to different tools and techniques, our workshops are designed to encourage curiosity, play and confidence. It’s not about getting it “right” — it’s about finding your creative flow, having a go, and enjoying the process in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Our workshops have been warmly received as a community project, bringing people together through creativity and shared experience. The best way to understand the magic is to come along and see for yourself.
