Autumn: A Season of Change, Creativity & Letting Go

Embracing the seasons through creativity, nature and wellbeing
At Art for Wellness CIC, we believe creativity and nature can offer us a gentle way to connect with ourselves, the world around us and the changing seasons.
Throughout the year, nature gives us different colours, textures, sounds, smells and experiences to inspire our creativity. We don’t need to be professional artists to benefit from this. Sometimes, simply noticing what is around us and taking a little time to create can help us slow down, reconnect and make space for ourselves.
And perhaps no season reminds us more of this than autumn.
As the leaves begin to change colour and fall, the days become shorter and the air becomes cooler. Nature starts to slow down and prepare for winter.
Autumn is a season of change, transition, reflection and letting go.
And there is something we can learn from that.
π What does autumn mean to you?
For some people, autumn brings cosy evenings, warm drinks, walks through crunchy leaves and beautiful golden colours.
For others, it can bring mixed emotions. The lighter evenings disappear, routines change and we may find ourselves reflecting on the year so far.
Autumn can be a reminder that change is a natural part of life.
The trees don’t hold onto every leaf.
They let go.
And perhaps we can sometimes do the same.
Creativity gives us a safe and gentle space to explore what we might want to hold onto, what we might want to release and what we would like to make room for.
You don’t need to know exactly what you’re feeling before you start creating.
Sometimes the colours, marks, shapes and textures can help us discover it.
π¨ Autumn Through Art
Autumn is one of our favourite seasons for creative inspiration because there is so much to see and collect.
Look closely at the world around you.
π Fallen leaves
π° Conkers and acorns
πΏ Seed heads
π Changing colours
π³ Tree bark
π§οΈ Rain patterns
βοΈ Autumn skies
π Woodland textures
πΎ Grasses and hedgerows
Nature becomes our colour palette.
We can use these observations as the starting point for painting, drawing, collage, printing, journaling, mixed media and mindful mark-making.
There doesn’t have to be a finished picture.
The creative process itself can be the important part.
β¨ An Autumn Creative Prompt
What are you ready to let go of?
Find a quiet space and take a few moments to think about the changing season.
You might like to collect a fallen leaf or simply look at a photograph of autumn nature.
Choose colours that represent how you feel.
Now create.
Don’t worry about making something beautiful.
Instead, experiment with:
- colours
- lines
- shapes
- textures
- words
- patterns
- torn paper
- natural materials
As you create, consider:
What would I like to let go of?
It could be a worry, an expectation, an old habit, something that has been weighing on you or simply something that no longer serves you.
You don’t have to share your answer with anyone.
You can simply allow the artwork to hold the thought for you.
Then ask yourself:
What would I like to make space for?
Perhaps it is rest.
Connection.
Joy.
Creativity.
Friendship.
Adventure.
Or simply a little more time for yourself.
πΏ Taking Inspiration From Nature
Our creative wellbeing workshops often begin with something very simple:
Look around you.
Nature is everywhere.
You don’t have to live beside a forest or have a huge garden. A tree outside a window, a few fallen leaves on a pavement or the colours in the autumn sky can all become creative inspiration.
Our work with nature and the seasons has been an important part of our workshops because it gives people an opportunity to slow down, notice their surroundings and use what they see as a starting point for creativity.
We’ve explored nature-inspired art through activities including painting, mixed media, collage, art journaling, mindful mark-making and creative exercises designed to encourage curiosity rather than perfection.
π Looking Back at Our Autumn-Inspired Workshops
Over the years, we’ve loved seeing how participants interpret nature in completely different ways.
One of the things we value most about therapeutic art is that there is no right or wrong way to create.
Two people can look at the same leaf and see something completely different.
One might see a beautiful colour.
Another might notice its shape.
Someone else might think about memories connected to autumn.
And another person might simply enjoy the feeling of making marks on paper.
That’s the magic of creativity.
We’ve used natural materials, seasonal colours, textures and observations from the environment to inspire creative activities and conversations around wellbeing.
Our Creative Wellbeing for Adults β Nature & Seasons programme has also explored the relationship between creativity, nature and our emotional wellbeing, giving participants the opportunity to experiment, create and connect with others.

π¨ What’s Coming Up?
We continue to run creative wellbeing workshops across Penistone, Barnsley, Sheffield and surrounding communities, bringing people together through creativity.

π A Season to Slow Down
Autumn reminds us that we don’t have to keep moving all the time.
Nature doesn’t rush from one season to another.
It changes gradually.
Perhaps we can give ourselves permission to do the same.
Take a walk.
Notice the colours.
Pick up a leaf.
Make some marks.
Write something down.
Create something simply because you can.
And if you are going through a period of change yourself, remember:
You don’t have to know what comes next to appreciate where you are now.
Just like the trees, sometimes letting go is part of making space for something new.
π Creativity. Nature. Connection. Wellbeing.
At Art for Wellness CIC, our aim is to make creativity and creative wellbeing accessible, inclusive and affordable.
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to explore their creativity, connect with others and take time for their own wellbeing.
