The Language of Colour
The Language of Colour: Why We Share the Meaning of Colours at Art for Wellness
Have you ever noticed yourself reaching for a particular colour without really thinking about it?
Maybe you’ve picked up a calming blue, a vibrant yellow or a deep green. It often happens naturally. We don’t always choose colours with our headsβwe choose them with our hearts.
At Art for Wellness, we often talk about the meanings behind colours, but not because we believe there is one correct answer. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
We share the language of colour to encourage curiosity, self-awareness and conversation.
Colour Is Personal
Every colour carries a different meaning for each of us.
Red might remind one person of love, while another connects it with strength or determination.
Blue may feel peaceful and calming, yet for someone else it may hold memories of sadness or loss.
Green often represents healing and growth, but it could also remind someone of childhood adventures in nature.
Our life experiences shape the way we see colour.
That’s why we never tell people what they should feel.
Instead, we invite them to explore what each colour means to them.

Colour Helps Us Express Feelings
Sometimes emotions are difficult to put into words.
When we’re overwhelmed, anxious or simply don’t know how we feel, colour can become another language.
A paintbrush, coloured pencil or marker suddenly gives us permission to express what words cannot.
There is no pressure.
No expectation.
Just gentle exploration.

There Are No Right or Wrong Colours

One of the values at Art for Wellness is creating a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental space.
That includes the colours people choose.
There are no mistakes.
No perfect pictures.
No colour police!
If your artwork is full of black today, that’s okay.
If tomorrow it’s bursting with bright pinks, oranges and yellows, that’s okay too.
Every colour belongs.
Every emotion belongs.
Every person belongs.
Why We Talk About Colour
When we share the meaning of colours on our social media, in workshops or through our blogs, we hope it encourages people to pause for a moment and reflect.
Ask yourself:
- What colour am I drawn to today?
- What emotions does it bring up?
- What memories does it hold?
- What colour do I need more of in my life?
There are no right or wrong answers.
The questions are often more important than the answers.
Creativity Without Judgement
Therapeutic art isn’t about creating beautiful artwork to hang on a wall.
It’s about creating moments of calm.
It’s about giving yourself permission to slow down.
It’s about noticing your thoughts, your feelings and your wellbeing.
Sometimes one splash of colour says more than a whole page of words.
Our Hope
At Art for Wellness, we believe creativity should be accessible to everyone.
You don’t need artistic experience.
You don’t need expensive materials.
You don’t even need confidence.
All you need is a willingness to begin.
If learning about colours encourages just one person to pick up a paintbrush, take a mindful moment, or start a conversation about how they’re feeling, then we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do.
Because colour isn’t just something we see.
It’s something we experience.
And sometimes, it’s the first step towards healing.

A Gentle Reminder
There are no right or wrong colours.
Choose the colours that speak to your heart.
Let them tell your story.
At Art for Wellness, we believe every colour has a place, every person has value, and every creative journey is worth celebrating.

In therapeutic art, colours don’t come with fixed meanings. While there are some common associations, every colour tells a different story depending on the person using it. Our memories, experiences, emotions and even the season of life we’re in can all influence the colours we choose.
For example:
β€οΈ Red may feel powerful, energetic and full of courage to one person, while another may use it to express frustration or anger.
𧑠Orange often represents creativity, warmth, enthusiasm and confidence.
π Yellow can bring feelings of happiness, hope and optimism, but for some people it may also reflect nervous energy or overwhelm.
π Green reminds many of healing, growth, balance and the calming beauty of nature.
π Blue is often associated with peace, calm and reflection, although darker blues can sometimes express sadness or deep thought.
π Purple can symbolise imagination, spirituality and creativity.
π Pink often represents kindness, compassion, nurturing and emotional healing.
π€ White may feel like a fresh start, offering space, peace and clarity.
π€ Black isn’t always negative. It can represent strength, protection, mystery and transformation as well as grief.
π€ Brown connects us with the earth, bringing feelings of stability, comfort and security.
π©Ά Grey can symbolise reflection, transition and balance.
π Turquoise and Teal are often linked to emotional healing, communication and inner calm.
β¨ Gold represents confidence, self-worth and abundance, while Silver encourages reflection and intuition.
β¨ Remember…
“Choose the colours that speak to your heart. They already know the story you’re trying to tell.”
Why We Chose Purple for Our Logo
Have you ever wondered why the Art for Wellness logo is purple?

Colours can influence how we feel, and for us, purple perfectly reflects everything Art for Wellness stands for.
Purple is created by blending the soothing, healing energy of blue with the expressive warmth and passion of red. Together, these colours create a beautiful balance of calmness and creativity.
For us, purple represents:
- Peace and calm β creating a safe, welcoming space where you can slow down, relax and simply be yourself.
- Imagination and inspiration β encouraging you to explore new ideas, experiment without fear and express yourself freely through art.
- Gentle harmony β bringing creativity and wellbeing together, helping you find balance, confidence and moments of joy.
Every time you see our purple logo, we hope it reminds you that Art for Wellness is a place where creativity is welcomed, wellbeing is nurtured, and everyone belongs.
Sometimes the smallest splash of colour can begin the biggest journey of healing.
